Armed Knight Rock Arch
The Salt PathArmed Knight Rock Arch is an offshore natural formation near Land's End, encountered where the coast abruptly gives way from the visitor-centre area to open wilderness. Its dramatic setting makes it more than a landmark: the arch frames the force of the Atlantic as a visible, physical presence in the walkers’ journey.
Setting and Appearance
Within a few hundred metres of the Land's End theme park, the walkers find themselves among some of the most impressive cliffs they have seen in Cornwall. Sheer, castellated granite faces meet seas arriving from the Atlantic, and immense plumes of water are driven through Armed Knight Rock Arch just offshore. The opening concentrates the scene’s scale and violence: rather than simply looking out at the sea, the walkers stand face-on to its force.
Place in the Journey
The arch appears during a passage of hardship. The walkers are hungry, tired, cold, and exposed to the elements, with little food and only the prospect of a damp tent for shelter. Against that vulnerability, the cliffs and the sea are not merely scenery; they give the landscape an independent power that dwarfs the people moving through it. Yet the rain has stopped, and the walkers choose to continue. Armed Knight Rock Arch thus belongs to a moment when the coast’s grandeur and their precarious circumstances meet, making the wilderness feel both formidable and inseparable from the freedom they have chosen.
